Georg Barlösius nació en Magdeburgo el 8 de junio de 1864 y murió en Charlottenburg el 10 de julio de 1908. Fue ilustrador, tipógrafo, litógrafo, grafista y pintor alemán, reconocido especialmente por su contribución al diseño gráfico y a la tipografía alemana de comienzos del siglo XX.
Hijo de un industrial, recibió formación artística en la Escuela del Museo de Artes Decorativas de Berlín y posteriormente continuó sus estudios en la Academia de Bellas Artes de Múnich. Entre sus maestros figuró el pintor Otto Knille, cuya influencia marcó parte de su sensibilidad estética.
Establecido más tarde en Charlottenburg, desarrolló una intensa actividad en el ámbito de la ilustración editorial y las artes aplicadas. Diseñó diversas tipografías para la fundición Bauersche Gießerei, entre ellas Barlösius Gotisch, Fette Barlösius Gotisch y Barlösius Buchschrift, ejemplos representativos del gusto ornamental y gótico alemán de la época.
Además de su trabajo tipográfico, ilustró numerosos libros y realizó composiciones gráficas de gran refinamiento decorativo. Su nombre también quedó vinculado al mundo del exlibris, donde produjo estampas de elegante línea gráfica y fuerte personalidad visual.
Entre sus trabajos monumentales destacan las pinturas murales del Theater des Westens de Charlottenburg y las vidrieras decorativas para edificios religiosos y escolares de Berlín.
Aunque falleció relativamente joven, Georg Barlösius dejó una obra significativa dentro de la gráfica alemana de transición entre el historicismo y las nuevas corrientes decorativas del siglo XX.

Georg Barlösius was born in Magdeburg on 8 June 1864 and died in Charlottenburg on 10 July 1908. He was a German illustrator, typographer, lithographer, graphic artist and painter, particularly noted for his contribution to early twentieth-century German graphic design and typography.
The son of an industrial manufacturer, he studied at the School of the Museum of Decorative Arts in Berlin before continuing his education at the Academy of Fine Arts in Munich. Among his teachers was the painter Otto Knille, whose influence shaped part of his artistic outlook.
After settling in Charlottenburg, Barlösius devoted much of his career to editorial illustration and applied arts. He designed several typefaces for the Bauersche Gießerei foundry, including Barlösius Gotisch, Fette Barlösius Gotisch and Barlösius Buchschrift, all representative of the ornamental Gothic style popular in Germany at the beginning of the twentieth century.
Alongside his typographic work, he illustrated many books and created decorative graphic compositions distinguished by elegant linework. He also became well known for his exlibris designs, which combined ornamental refinement with strong visual identity.
His monumental works included murals for the Theater des Westens in Charlottenburg and stained-glass windows for religious and educational buildings in Berlin.
Although his life was relatively short, Georg Barlösius left an important legacy within German graphic art during the transition from historicism to modern decorative movements.

Fils d’un industriel, il étudia à l’École du Musée des Arts décoratifs de Berlin avant de poursuivre sa formation à l’Académie des Beaux-Arts de Munich. Parmi ses maîtres figurait le peintre Otto Knille, dont l’influence marqua sa sensibilité artistique.
Installé ensuite à Charlottenburg, il consacra une grande partie de sa carrière à l’illustration éditoriale et aux arts appliqués. Il dessina plusieurs caractères typographiques pour la fonderie Bauersche Gießerei, notamment Barlösius Gotisch, Fette Barlösius Gotisch et Barlösius Buchschrift, représentatifs du goût gothique ornemental allemand du début du siècle.
Parallèlement à son activité typographique, il illustra de nombreux ouvrages et réalisa des compositions graphiques d’une grande élégance décorative. Il acquit également une reconnaissance particulière dans le domaine des exlibris.
Parmi ses réalisations monumentales figurent les peintures murales du Theater des Westens de Charlottenburg ainsi que des vitraux décoratifs destinés à plusieurs édifices berlinois.
Malgré une carrière relativement brève, Georg Barlösius occupe une place importante dans l’évolution des arts graphiques allemands entre historicisme et modernité décorative.
